Illinois State University Achieves Official Chapter Status

NORMAL, Ill., June 26, 2014—Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. has officially inducted Illinois State University as the sorority’s Sigma Chapter marking it the 18^th chapter in the Midwest. The organization has chapters located throughout Illinois, Indiana and Texas.

The ladies at Illinois State University recently celebrated their one-year colony anniversary June 22^ndand on June 22^nd appeared before the National Board of Directors (NBOD) to present their past year’s events and achievements. All programming is spearheaded by the organization’s four goals: academic excellence, community service, cultural awareness and sisterhood.

The NBOD reviews criteria for colonies to achieve chapter-standing including: a detailed listing of recruitment efforts and outcomes of all lines started, letter of support from university personnel and grades for all members.

“These ladies worked hard this past year to create thought-provoking events and establish relationships with other student organizations,” said Gina Sanchez, national president of the NBOD. “Their hard work has earned attention from university faculty, staff and students while establishing themselves as young leaders on their campus.”

Career paths for the ladies encompass various sectors from the workforce including communication studies, education, finance, sociology and anthropology, human resources and business information systems.

Gamma Phi Omega Announces 2014-2015 National Board of Directors

Chicago, Ill.—Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Incorporated has elected a National Board of Directors (NBOD) for the 2014-2015 term. The NBOD has nine returning members and welcomed four sisters to serve the organization on a national level. The NBOD is the governing body that oversees the various entities of Gamma Phi Omega. These ladies establish policies and procedures for chapters and colonies to abide while also creating programs encompassing the Sorority’s four goals: academic excellence, community service, cultural awareness and sisterhood.

The 2014-2015 National Board of Directors:

Gina Sanchez, DePaul University Communication master’s graduate, brings with her six years of experience on the NBOD and will be celebrating 10 years as a sister of Gamma Phi Omega in December 2014.
Andrea Keller, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville masters in Public Administration graduate, has helped create policies beneficial for Gamma Phi Omega and the institutions where membership is held.
Jazmin Romo, alum from DePaul University’s College of Communication, continues to serve the organization she joined six years ago and will provide the Sorority’s body with an open line of communication increasing transparency regarding NBOD matters.
Nycole Natalia Smith, DePaul University graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Finance and Marketing, will ensure that all three Sorority trademarks submitted to United States Patent and Trademark Office are fully approved and active.
Daisy Magaña, masters graduate from DePaul University’s College of Communication, continues to increase the Sorority’s online presence through her web content development and social media skills.
Kimberly Roberts, Indiana University alumnae with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting/International Business and Spanish, will oversee expansion efforts.
Vanessa Valentin, Indiana University graduate with a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism, will continue to improve national programs for the undergraduates and alumnae in her role as program director.
Melissa Claudio-Lewis, Masters of Education from National-Louis University graduate with a Masters of Education, will service the Sorority as director of alumnae affairs and organize a graduate chapter retreat.
Kathy Portillo, a DePaul University alum with a Bachelors of Arts in Public Relations & Advertising, plans to establish an official academic month and scholastic challenge to promote the Sorority’s goal of academic excellence.

“This is a very exciting time for us. For the first time in recent years, we have a full board comprised of sisters ranging in years of membership and professional experience,” said Gina Sanchez, national president of the National Board of Directors. “I am looking forward to what this diverse group of women will accomplish in the upcoming year.”

Joining this year are Northern Illinois University Master of Arts graduate Constance Ervins, masters candidate Valerie Vargas, Indiana alum with a degree in Sports Marketing & Management Sophia Lugo and recent Indiana University graduate from the School of Education Tania Figueroa. These new directors bring a combined 11 years of involvement.

The new term begins June 1, 2014 and will end May 30, 2015. During the term the NBOD will meet on a monthly basis to discuss agendas and establish action items in addition to participating in a summer and winter retreat for business and social purposes.

Gamma Phi Omega Announces Newest Colony

Sorority expands presence in the South at Texas A&M University

College Station, Texas—Since 1991, Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. has expanded within the Midwest to numerous colleges and universities. In its 23rd year of existence, the Sorority announces its newest colony outside the Midwest region. On April 26, 2014, Gamma Phi Omega welcomed Kassandra Peña, Dessiree Martinez, Elizabeth Castillo, Xochitl Colunga and Melissa Gutierrez into the organization and recognized them as Noble Founders of the Texas A&M University Colony.

The Sorority is committed to developing mature, supportive, professional women. “The National Board of Director’s congratulates the women and recognizes their determination, passion and strength for establishing Gamma Phi Omega. We are confident that they develop into an exceptional chapter,” said Socorro Garcia, national president of the National Board of Directors. “We would also like to acknowledge Nicole Thomas and Joanne Reyes, the leaders of the membership team, guiding the women as they sought membership into Gamma Phi Omega.” The most recent expansion contributes to the Sorority’s 17 undergraduate chapters, two alumnae chapters, four alumnae colonies and three undergraduate colonies.

American Diabetes Association Names Gamma Phi Omega Top Team For Fourth Year In A Row

Sorority contributes to its national philanthropy and surpasses its fundraising goal

Chicago, Ill.—Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Incorporated was named the top fundraising team at the American Diabetes Association’s Indianapolis Step Out to Fight Diabetes Walk. The Sorority was able to earn this honor from the combined efforts of its members, the Running Swans that participated in the 2013 Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon, friends and family.

Gamma Phi Omega raised a record amount, more than $15,600, to help find a cure for diabetes in 2013. The sorority has worked together to raise more than $34,000 in the last three years at the Indianapolis Walk. The ladies tirelessly raise money for family and friends affected by diabetes. Experts approximate 366 million worldwide currently have diabetes, 25.8 million in the United States.

Gamma Phi Omega Establishes National Scholarship Month

Chicago, Ill.—Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. (Gamma Phi Omega) has long revered academic excellence as its primal goal. In a historic move for the sorority, Gamma Phi Omega is inaugurating October as its National Scholarship Month.

The new national initiative was established as a means to further promote educational advancement in academia that fosters the sorority’s membership, the Latino community and all collegiate Greeks that strive to excel scholastically.

“This is truly a significant and exciting moment for us because very few organizations have a designated month for academics so it speaks to how much we value higher education,” said Kathy “PYROS” Portillo, national academic director. “This will be a time where we provide our membership with resources necessary for their academic enrichment and personal success as well as assist our communities with educational initiatives.”

Members will receive tools and resources outlining financial assistance links and deadlines for college tuition and/or study abroad programs.

Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. Makes Academic Strides

Undergraduate members embody the sorority’s primal goal of academic excellence

Academic Excellence is one of four goals that has served as a cornerstone to Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc.’s (Gamma Phi Omega) success. Within the past 5 years, the sorority has steadily increased its cumulative grade point average (GPA) and now stands at a cumulative GPA of 3.06. Kathy “PYROS” Portillo, academic director, presented the standing as part of her national academic statistical report to the rest of Gamma Phi Omega’s National Board of Directors (NBOD).

The report, which contains key statistics about Gamma Phi Omega’s academic standings, also showed that 53% of the undergraduates are above a 3.0 cumulative GPA. “The National Board of Directors is proud of these findings and recognize the overall effort made by the undergraduate members,” said National President Socorro “Cuentoz” Garcia. “We consistently strive to set the example in the realm of collegiate Greek academics.”
